Gamers can generally be categorised in two different groups (with a lot of overlap, mind you)...
1. Those that like a game because of the gameplay. 2. Those that like a game because of the pretty graphics.
The first group probably couldn't care less about WIS, but they DO care that the gameplay is working. This group would rather have CCP working of fixing the gameplay than add content they won't use anyway. The second group will like WIS because it'll look cool.
However, as people grow older, they tend to gravitate from the second group to the first. EVE has a pretty old customer base (iirc) compared to games like the-game-I-will-not-mention, so that is probable another reason why a relative large part of the EVE playerbase see WIS as wasted.
Also consider.. If WIS is purely a graphical addition, like being pretty pictures of ships that you can rotate with people walking around etc., how long will it be before people tire of it? Generally, once people have seen a pretty picture, they'll not look at it again! What's important in a hangar for most people? Seeing that your ship is loaded with ammo as a movie, or getting it loaded with ammo in the fastest possible way? What's important at a corp meeting? That you can see avatars of other corp members moving around an imaginary meeting room, or the actual things you're talking about over TS?
That is the reason I personally think WIS is a waste of development effort. Not because _I_ will not use it, but because I think that very few others will really use or notice it once the initial 'Cool!' effect wears off. How often do we look at the pretty structures present in missions? They've taken hours for some dev to put together. We look at them once, say 'Cool', and don't look at them ever again....
Unless pretty pictures has a PURPOSE supported by gameplay, it'll just be eye candy which is NOT the reason many of the players play this game.
No, disagree with almost everything you've said. I ogle my ships all the time both in space as I fly about and in stations when I should be fitting them or doing other more productive things because they look cool (well most of them do) I buy faction ships cause they look cool (and have cool mods) and I'm an older gamer who should know better than to spend half his free time playing a game. Game play is extremely important, however.
